“Buncombe County has the highest cost of living of any metro area in all of North Carolina,” says Paula Sellars, Associate Director of Bounty & Soul in a recent interview with the Citizen Times on the issue of rising food insecurity in the WNC community. With 53% of renters in the county struggling to afford their housing, people are “choosing between rent and food,” continues Sellars. “In that wage disparity, and in that unaffordable housing situation that we’re in, food insecurity is baked in.”
